GTA V hits $800m worth of sales in 24 hours

Grand Theft Auto V, after 24 hours of release the distribution company Take-Two Interactive have announced that the game had hit a huge £490 million worth of sales within the first day and should easily break £600 million within a week.

The previous record was held by Call of Duty: Black Ops which hit £315 million in the first 24 hours back in 2009. As well as this Call of Duty holds the title for the quickest entertainment product to achieve $1 billion (£624m) in sales hitting it by day 15.

Take-Two Interactive’s chairman and CEO, Strauss Zelnick, had this to say in a press conference earlier: “All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response of Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence.

“Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience the evolution of this remarkable series. In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans whose loyalty and enthusiasm were rewarded with what the New York Times called ‘the most immersive spectacle in interactive entertainment.’ We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games’ creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch.”
