GTA V smashes several Guinness World Records

Grand Theft Auto V’s success over the past month has been huge, however, according to Guinness, it’s also been record breaking.

Guinness announced that GTA V has set six world records since its launch, adding to its previous title of “most viewed trailer.” The game, which launched last month for consoles alone, has become the best-selling action-adventure game of all time, the best-selling video game, and the fastest entertainment property to ever net $1 billion. The game also has reached the heights on revenue generated in a 24-hour period.

Grand Theft Auto V was expected to be a hit at launch, and surprise surprise, it was. The game is part of what is one of the most popular game franchises in the industry and a new entrant into the series hadn’t been launched in years. Rockstar Games, the title’s developer, announced last month that the game sold 11.2 million units in its first 24 hours, netting $815.7 million in revenue. Sales reached $1 billion after three days on the market.

With its new records, Grand Theft Auto V has climbed to the top of the gaming business. The title is also tops in the entertainment industry by generating more revenue than some of the most popular films and television shows.

“Gaming is no longer a niche hobby, as GTA 5 has proved, and how exciting that it’s taken on the might of Hollywood and won,” Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said in a statement on Tuesday.
