Five of the Best: Gaming Laptops

No Comment Yet

If you’re big into your games, and you want to play on the go, you’re going to need a powerful gaming laptop to be able to keep up with the latest releases. There’s something amazing about pulling a brand-new laptop out of the packaging, let alone how it might make you feel.

You know that from now on, after you’ve pulled that machine out of the box, you’re free. The world is at your fingertips. You can browse, play games, work, experience different media and so much more, all right in front of you. The only difference between this and a desktop PC is that you can take that power with you, wherever you go, finally having an answer to the demands of modern life.

The Perks and Drawbacks

The honest truth of gaming on the go is that there are perks and drawbacks to it, just like there are with desktop PC gaming. Someone who enjoys travelling but still wants to be able to play some of their favourite games will find that laptop gaming is the way to go. For others, those who prefer to play in the comfort of their own home, will not see the same benefits.

The fact of the matter is, gaming laptops are pricey, and there’s definitely an argument to be made that you’d be able to get the same specification or better in a desktop machine, than you ever would in a laptop.

Gaming laptops can also be fairly noisy when they start to head up, which is, as soon as you open something remotely challenging for the graphics card to process. On the plus side though, you have a fairly massive explosion of power in a backpack, slung over your shoulder.

Getting the Right Result

Thankfully, due to the technological advancements that chipmakers have been making, laptops, especially the gaming kind, have been coming in at better price points. So, if you’re looking for a machine that can play something like Fortnite, Apex Legends or Minecraft, there’s a lot to choose from.

If you’re looking to play those types of games and many, many more, including new releases, you’d need to get your hands on the latest hardware. But that comes with a price.

Finding Our Five

Laptops themselves can be incredibly subjective, because over and above the standard specifications that any machine may have, there’s always the look, feel and layout of a laptop too. Either way, we’ve picked up some of the most popular gaming laptops that are sure to make waves the next time you’re gaming on the go.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701

CPU: Intel Core i7-8750H

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080

RAM: 24GB DDR4

Storage: 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD

Screen: 17.3-inch 1920×1080 IPS (144Hz)

With the Zephyrus, you’ll be right at the forefront of gaming technology. It has a powerful processor, the latest in graphics cards and plenty memory to keep you going. The 17.3-inch screen is a welcome addition to the machine while still keeping it thin and portable.

MSI GS75 Stealth 8SG

CPU: Intel Core i7-8750H

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080

RAM: 32GB DDR4

Storage:1TB M.2 SSD, 2x M.2 SSD NVMe

Screen: 17.3-inch 1920×1080 IPS (144Hz)

Keeping on par with the ASUS Zephyrus, you can expect the exact same specs from this machine aside from a little more RAM. There’s also something to be told in the storage department as this makes use of NVMe, a faster standard in storage space.

HP Omen 15

CPU: Intel i7-9750H

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660

RAM: 8GB RAM

Storage: 512GB SSD

Screen: 15.6-inch 1920×1080 IPS 144Hz

HP’s addition to our gaming line-up isn’t a strange one, and while this machine may have some lower-performing components to it, the price is also far more reasonable, despite the fact that your processor is better. It maintains the same screen as all the rest though, giving you IPS quality on a 144Hz refresh rate. You may need to upgrade the RAM or opt for more upon purchase.

Acer Predator Triton 500

CPU: Intel Core i7-8750H

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060

RAM: 16GB DDR4

Storage: 512GB SSD

Screen: 15,6-inch 1920×1080 IPS 144Hz

The Predator Triton 500 is another great machine and while the screen is a little smaller, you’re not compromising on the technology, using the RTX graphics card. The laptop, as a result, is also smaller because of the screen and you can actually opt for a 300Hz screen too.

Razer Blade Pro 17

CPU: Intel Core i7-9750H

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080

RAM: 16GB DDR

Storage: 512GB M.2 PCIe

Screen: 17.3-inch 29120×1080 IPS (144Hz)

Razer laptops and peripherals are usually quite pricey, and the Razer Blade is no different. The hardware though, is solid, and the machine is rather compact. You may not get as much power as some of the other competitor components here, but Razer products are always of the highest quality, and with a higher powered processor, you might find things to be quicker than you first thought.
